New cooking camp for kids in Montreal

Kids will learn about about cooking and baking in an interactive setting

Kids aged 10-15 can channel their inner Gordon Ramsay or Julia Child at a new day camp this summer.

Organized by the Institut de tourisme et d’hôtellerie du Québec (ITHQ), the Culinary Camp, which runs from June 26 to Aug. 10,  teaches participants the ins and outs of cooking and baking in an interactive setting.

During each one-week session, campers will explore different types of gastronomy and international cuisines through workshops (held in French), led by trained chefs.

One day, for example, will be dedicated to Italian cuisine, said ITHQ public relations officer Marie-Josée Lestage. In the morning, campers will learn the techniques of cooking linguine and then get to eat it for lunch. Later in the day, kids will cook lasagna that they will be able to bring home to their families for dinner. The majority of the day will be spent cooking, but kids can take part in other activities during free periods.

Along with creating savoury dishes, campers will try their hand at making pastry and will also learn about cooking vegetarian meals. Although the camp is geared more towards kids who have some knowledge in the kitchen, past experience isn’t mandatory.

“We want to spread the love of cooking with kids,” Lestage said. “At our camp, every child will develop independence in the kitchen and discover that eating well isn’t hard.”

Lestage said the camp had been held for several years before it went on hiatus in 2008, but with 2018 marking the organization’s 50th anniversary, it was decided that this would be the perfect opportunity to revive the program. The ITHQ is an education centre that offers training in the restaurant, hotel and tourism industry.

The address is 3535 St. Denis St. For more information or to register, visit campculinaire.ithq.qc.ca
