Looking to get the family out of the house and physically active? Whether you’re a seasoned runner or simply like to race, you may want to consider participating in Outremont’s La Foulée des Parcs on June 21.
This is the third year that community group Outremont en Famille has hosted such a race, which drew more than 1,700 people last year. All Montrealers are invited to attend, and with five courses (one kilometre, two kilometres, five kilometres, 10 kilometres and a family relay) and nine separate races, there’s something for everyone. There is even a two-kilometre race that gives parents the chance to bring their child along in a stroller, and two, one-kilometre races for children aged 3 to 7 and 8 to 12. Snacks will be provided for runners and their families, and all children under the age of 12 who race will receive a medal.
“We really want to showcase our park and encourage families to run, it’s the most affordable way to stay in shape,” says event director Andreea Schmitzer. “And for a young kid to run a race and receive a medal – that will mark them forever, and encourage them to be active in the future.”
The money raised will go towards the renovation of the Maison de la Famille, which offers art, sports, and informative workshops to residents of Outremont and Montreal. During the day, there will be a variety of activities at Outremont Park, such as chocolate fondue and a croissant-making workshop. Kids can kick around a soccer ball in the field and Montreal police will showcase an electric car. Children can also help create a giant mural, which will later be featured in the Outremont en Familles’ intergenerational centre.
All races begin at different points along Outremont St. and end in Outremont Park. It’s $50 for the family relay, $20 for the two-kilometre race with strollers, and $13 for the children’s races before June 17.
