Art therapy, journaling workshops for teens

This is a six-week program that combines discussion with art-making techniques such as drawing, painting, sculpting and collage

Teens struggling with anxiety, low self-esteem or other difficult feelings can get help to work through their emotions in a fun and meaningful way this summer with therapy groups that encourage creative expression.

Couple and Family Therapy Montreal is offering workshops for teens aged 14 to 16 using art therapy and creative journaling to provide a safe outlet for intense feelings and teach healthy ways of handling distress. Both workshops are led by teen specialist Samantha Abdallah.

The Art Therapy Group for Teens is a six-week program that combines discussion with art-making techniques such as drawing, painting, sculpting and collage. No previous art experience is required. The $350 fee to participate includes all materials. The group meets on Wednesdays from July 11 to Aug. 15 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

The Creative Journaling Group, on the other hand, is a two-day, eight-hour intensive workshop on Aug. 23 and 24 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to introduce teens to journaling. The workshop will encourage teens to learn techniques to explore their thoughts and feelings as well as for self-expression. Participants will create their own journal and learn art-making techniques they can incorporate along with writing. The fee for the workshop is $280 and includes all materials as well as a healthy snack.

Couple and Family Therapy Montreal, located at 479 St. Joseph Blvd E., also hosts a six-week video course and discussion group for parents to better understand preschoolers. The course is designed for adults caring for children aged 2-5, and is available by request.
