Taking the kids to a restaurant can be a challenge; oftentimes, parents are embarrassed because the kids can’t keep still, they speak loudly or risk breaking something with their fidgety behaviour. But there are many restaurants that put parents at ease by making sure kids feel welcome. From kids’ menus and crayons to fun decor and affordable prices, there are many restaurants happy to receive little ones.

We asked our Facebook fans about their favourite family restaurants and here are some of the ones that stood out:

1. Aquinta Portuguese

We love Aquinta Portuguese restaurant on Ontario St. E. Super family friendly and understanding of my 3-year-old’s need to see and touch everything in sight. Prices are reasonable ($35 to feed a family of four) and it is family-run by a father of five with his two oldest sons. They don’t have a kids’ menu that I know of since we always request family service (large plates placed at the center of the tables with whole chicken, fries, rice, salads, and we self-serve).  They also have a quaint terrace. - Fauve Leesa Guillemette

2. The Green Spot

The Green Spot on Notre Dame St. W., in St. Henri. They have a very affordable kids’ menu that all my children love. The staff is very friendly and helpful, and it is one of the few restaurants where we feel welcome with the kids. Three of my children love their mini pizzas, another one loves the hot dogs. But they all really enjoy the ice cream at the end of the meal. We also enjoy going for breakfast; my children love the pancakes and they share a fruit plate. We have a large family and enjoy the corner booth. - Lynn Buchanan

3. Le Buffet des Continents

Le Buffet des Continents in Mascouche. Kids eat for free with each adult and the restaurant is tastefully decorated. It’s very family oriented and they have a wonderful ice cream bar and pizza counter, which the children love. The service is awesome, food amazing and also nicely presented. The wonton soup is the best I have ever had. The Sunday brunches are great. Wish we had one closer to Montreal but it’s worth the drive. - Lynn Roberge

4. Jukebox Burgers

My kids like Jukebox Burgers at Marché de l’Ouest because they love burgers and shakes. The kids like the 1950s style decor, the neon lights, shiny booths and jukebox. They like the burgers and I like the vegetarian options and the sweet potato fries. It’s the type of place I might take one of our youngest for a one-on-one special treat. Then they get to have a milkshake or a sundae, too.  - Tanya Bagshaw

5. L'Oeufrier

L’Oeufrier on Westminster Ave. N. in Montreal West. It has a ton of breakfast foods (crepes, waffles, smoothies, egg combos and breakfast poutines that are awesome). The staff and owner are very pleasant, friendly and attentive to our kids (3 and 10 months). They listen to what they say; they don’t ignore them or treat them differently than anyone else. You sense that they really like kids. The food is consistently good and as my daughter loves eggs, we always ask them to bring us her eggs as soon as they are ready and we usually get them within five minutes. - Missy Berube Friemann

Café 92 on Sherbrooke St. W., in N.D.G. This is more of a coffee shop but they have great food. They are very kid friendly and are part of the Route du lait, a network of businesses in Montreal that provide a space for mothers to nurse without being obligated to buy anything. The owner even puts out a few toys for the kids. My little one likes their quesadillas (they have cheese, chicken, avocado or beans). They also have a variety of sandwiches, soups and a few pizza options and cookies, cakes and ice cream for dessert. - Riham Adam

8. Gryphon d'Or

Gryphon d’Or on Monkland Ave. in N.D.G. My daughters have always loved brunch, lunch or high tea at  Gryphon d’Or (they used to think it was called “Gryffindor,” as in Harry Potter). The delicious high tea has been an end-of-school year tradition in our family for years. Donna (the owner) makes the most amazing baked goods, and the finger sandwiches are perfect for little fingers. Cozy, friendly spot. - Alissa Sklar

10. Jack Astor's

My kids love Jack Astor’s. The waiters are fun and the kids get to draw on the table with crayons! My kids like building their own tacos. They also like the chicken bites, the burgers and the pasta. My eldest (who is 10) likes the sirloin steak. They have a few different meal choices on the kids’ menu, they get a drink and they have four choices of desserts. My kids also love it for birthdays because they make you stand on the chair and sing I’m a Little Teapot. - Lydia Kansou

12. Boulangerie Café Le Den

Boulangerie Café Le Den on Donegani Ave. in Pointe-Claire. I’ve been going to Le Den for years; during the time I was pregnant and now with my two kids. It’s a great little café with a bin of toys, crayons and paper, books to read, and great food. My 7-year-old likes the pancakes with bacon, while my 3-year-old loves the homemade muffins, the “kou-kou-kou” egg sandwich, and they both LOVE the gingerbread men. The owners are so lovely and accommodating, and while there is no real changing table in the bathroom, there is a small folding one you can use. There are also a couple of high chairs and booster seats. You can hang out and read the paper, meet friends for lunch (try the peanut dumplings), or bring your kids. We go two or three times a week, either for a full breakfast or to grab a muffin and coffee to go. And during the summer, the kids enjoy sitting outside and watching the trains go by. - Christine Latreille
