Travel agent can help those with special needs
Margo Pedersen can help people with various disabilities travel to places that offer accommodations and transportation with special needs in mind
For more than 20 years, Margo Pedersen, operations manager at Lara Travel in Ville St. Laurent, has helped people book their dream vacations all over the world. But she often had clients with physical limitations or special needs looking for flights or hotels that could accommodate them, and realized there were not many agencies in Montreal that could handle these types of requests.
Looking to fill this void, Pedersen became a ‘certified accessible travel advocate’ in November through Kéroul, a non-profit organization that promotes inclusive and accessible tourism. With this certification, Pedersen helps clients with auditory, physical, mental and visual issues book vacations.
Pedersen says many people with special needs are not aware there are resources to make travel easier. Many cruise lines (Disney, for example) offer modified showers, wider door frames and emergency call buttons.
She also helps large families who need multiple rooms and groups with senior citizens and children find appropriate accommodation or special transportation to help them get from the airport to the hotel. Pedersen does not charge her clients extra for helping them find these specific accommodations.
“Everybody should be able to go out and enjoy the world, regardless of their situation,” Pedersen says. Lara Travel is located at 555 Decarie Blvd. in Ville St. Laurent.
