Kid-friendly café opens in Rosemont-La-Petite-Patrie
Bouge Petit Café combines a playground with a restaurant for parents with babies and toddlers
After the birth of their second son, Benjamin Bérubé and Paula Gomes found it difficult to find a restaurant that would accommodate them with their two small children. Staff at the eateries they once frequented now made them feel unwelcome when the kids cried or needed to move around.
With years of combined business experience, the pair decided to fill the void and officially opened the doors to Bouge Petit Café in early March. Previously a mattress store, the 1,700 square-foot space in Rosemont-La-Petite-Patrie now houses a playground, kitchen and restaurant area. “We wanted to create a space for parents to feel comfortable while their kids played and enjoyed themselves,” Bérubé said.
The playground was designed so that children under the age of 3 can work on their motor skills, stimulate their brains and engage in physical activity. The area includes two slides, a small ball pit, cushioned climbing blocks and structures, musical toys and baby walkers. Bright and colourful illustrations of cartoon bears in helicopters and hot air balloons adorn the walls. Full-day access to the playground area costs $12 per child, but there is a free, smaller space for kids over the age of 4 to meet other children and play with construction blocks.
Gomes says that many of the play centres they had been to in the past offered mostly fast food items, and they wanted to provide customers with healthy options. The menu includes fruit and green smoothies, sweet or savoury crepes, yogurt, fruit, organic tea and coffee as well as baby food.
There are diaper-changing areas and a private breastfeeding space. The café is located at 6546 Papineau Ave., and open weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and weekends from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Reservations are required.
